Merle Haggard
Merle Haggard was born on 6th April 1937. The American country music singer, guitarist, instrumentalist and songwriter starred in his band The Strangers along with Buck Owens. The Strangers helped create the Bakersfield Sound which is characterised by the unique twang of the Fender Telecaster guitars, vocal harmonies and a rough edge not heard on the polished Nashville Sound recordings of the time.
By the 70's Merle was aligned with the growing 'outlaw' country music movement, continuing to release successful albums throughout the 90's and into 2000.
His songs display a personal honesty about universal themes such as loss, love, regret and redemption.
Merle was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame for his song Okie from Muskogee in 1997.
