ASH GRUNWALD WINS BLUES & ROOTS WORK OF THE YEAR
JULY 23rd 2010
Congratulations are in order for blues troubadour Ash Grunwald, for taking home the APRA Music Award for Blues And Roots Work Of The Year for his single ‘Breakout’, at the ceremony last night.
With countless award nominations since his debut release in 2002, the 2009 single ‘Breakout’ has given Ash and co-writer Pip Norman their first APRA Music Awards win.
It was a rare night off for the four-time ARIA Award nominee, who is smack bang in the middle of the East Coast run of his mammoth national album launch tour. In August Ash will slip out of the country for a European tour, before returning to complete the Western Australian dates through September.
The first single, ‘Walking’ has been warmly embraced by radio across the country, and the film clip is about to be serviced nationally.
“On his new album, Grunwald’s sound continues to evolve, successfully melding blues guitar riffs with junkyard percussion, such as cymbals made from 44-gallon drums, and modern beats….The album, which feels as fresh as it does earthy, was compiled like a hip-hop release.…By helping the blues evolve, Grunwald is carrying on R.L.Burnside’s legacy.” (3 Stars)
